Situated in the northeast region of Vietnam, Ha Long Bay is a part of the Gulf of Tonkin, and comprises the regions of Ha Long City , the township of Cam Pha and a part of the island district of Van Don. To the south-west it borders the island of Cat ba, to the cast is the sea and what remains borders the mainland with a coastline of 120km. Ha Long bay is made up of 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names. There are two kinds, limestone and schist, which are concentrated in two main zones the south-east (belonging to Bai Tu Long Bay), and the south-west (belonging to Ha Long Bay). The densely concentrated zone of stone islands, grottoes and caves, world famous for its spectacular scenery, forms the central zone of Ha Long bay which has been named on of UNESCO's World heritage Sites.The bay itself has an area of 43,400ha, comprises 775 islands and forms a triangle: with the island of Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto) to the west; the lake of Ba Ham (Three Shelter Lake) to the south; and the island of Cong Tay to the east. Viewed from above , Ha Long Bay resembles a geographic work of art. While exploring the bay , it's hard not to feel lost in some legendary would of stone islands. There is Man's Head Island, resembling a man standing and looking towards the mainland. Dragon Island looks like a dragon hovering above the turquoise water. Yet another island, la Vong, resembles an old man fishing. There are also the islands of the sail, the Pair of Cocks and the Incense Burner, which all bear astonishing resemblances to their namesakes. The forms of the islands change incessantly, depending on the angles of lighting and from where they're viewed. At the core, are wonderful caves and grottoes such as Thien Cung (Heavenly Residence Grotto), Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto), Sung Sot (Surprise Grotto) and Tam Cung (Three Palace Grotto).

Cat ba Island and Cat ba National Park

Cat ba is an archipelago comprising approximately 366 islands or different shape and size. The main island is Cat Ba with an area of about 20,000 hectares, located 30 nautical miles from Hai phong. More than 20 species of birds and 20 species of reptiles and amphibians can be found in the national park. The White-head Vooc, an endangered bird species is found on the cliffs separating the island from the sea. The yellow monkey, the Son duong (chamois) and many beautiful birds such as the Cao cat, the boi ca (king fisher), the hut mat and the dau riu also live on the island. The topography of the park is varied, consisting mainly of limestone mountains with many grottoes and caves, as well as beaches with fine white sand. The limestone mountains have an average height of 150m, the highest being Cao vong Peak, with a height of 322m above the sea level. Cat ba National Park has the largest are of tropical virgin forests in Vietnam. According to research, there are 745 species of plants, 495 lines of descent, 149 families, among which are 350 medical plants such as cho doi, trai ly, lat hoa, kin giao and va nuoc.
